The essential design challenge in this townhouse was to transform the relatively narrow width of the property into interiors that felt relaxed in terms of the materials, colour-palette, and detailing. And to achieve this, Antony Chan developed finely balanced compositions of grids, occasionally accented with subtle curves. In the living room, the grid of leather wall panels has horizontal polished steel bands and curved corners, and a mirror reflects an artist’s metal-dust grid on the television screen cover. In the dining space, the grids of the wall and the glazed stair screen are counterpointed by the bespoke demountable metal stair balustrade.

The wall behind the bed in main bedroom is effectively an exquisitely crafted three-dimensional leather artwork, made by one of Antony Chan’s specialists in London. The grid strategy is present here in the design of the pale, full-height wooden cupboard fronts, whose grid-lines are extremely thin – accentuating the graphic quality of the piece, and its precise hand-made quality.

Grids also appear in the design of the study walls and the stairwell leading up from the sub-basement. Key details include the quarter radius of the metal-capped shelf in the alcove in one study, and the precise alignment of the top shelf and the upper grid-line of the wall. In the other study, the three-dimensional grid of bespoke open-box shelving creates visually satisfying gradations of light and shadow. And in the sub-basement, the minimalist balustrade and handrail add an elegantly dynamic touch to what is otherwise a calm and orderly space.
