It’s immediately apparent that the design of these interiors are very pleasantly ‘social’ and comfortable, whether for the owner’s family or guests. The furniture in the main living room is deliberately well-spaced to ensure clear views to the west through the full-height glazing, and the room is divided by a unique Antony Chan-designed cabinet with shimmering glass bricks. The extra-large TV screen is masked with a moveable, lozenge-patterned brass panel, and the carpet – also designed by Antony – subtly counterpoints the colour and veining of the marble floor.

In the dining room, the accent is on refined, highly crafted details, such as the patinated ribbed brass in the bar alcove and the similarly ribbed ventilation grill set into the ceiling. The metal-structured uplighter lamp above the dining table was chosen to create a specific effect: it casts unusual, but not overdramatic organic shadows on the ceiling. Even more sensual is the unique combination of the curtain-like sandstone walls, the curved bronze balustrade with illuminated holes to mimic sparkling light off the sea, and the mirror-walled staircase – a nod to the exquisite stairs in Coco Chanel’s Paris apartment.

The family room and master bedroom share an interesting feature. The back wall in the former has a pale-painted wooden surface with vertical ribs, and in the bedroom the wall behind the bed is leather, with ribs and vertical lighting-slots. The screen near the foot of the bed was also designed by Antony Chan, as was the beautifully proportioned dressing table and alcove. Two more notable, highly crafted features are the oculus above the bath, and the bespoke door handle, whose geometric peak-and-trough surface feels pleasant in the hand and reflects light in interestingly varied ways.
